Sōgetsu-ryū

Founded in 1927 by Sofu Teshigahara, Sōgetsu-ryū (草月流) redefined traditional flower arrangement as a modern, expressive art form. Guided by the belief that “自由な心でいける花- Ikebana can be created by anyone, anywhere, with any materials,” . Sōgetsu celebrates freedom, individuality, and creativity.
Unlike classical schools that emphasise formal structures, Sōgetsu embraces Jiyūka (freestyle Ikebana), marked a bold evolution where tradition met modern artistry. Breaking away from convention, Sōgetsu introduced abstract expression and experimental techniques, transforming Ikebana into a living art that reflects the spirit of its time. While rooted in the timeless principles of balance and proportion, it embraces unconventional materials such as metal, glass, and plastic, translating nature’s rhythm into striking contemporary forms.
Led today by Akane Teshigahara, the school continues to inspire innovation while honouring its founder’s vision. With chapters in over 60 countries, Sōgetsu’s inclusive philosophy invites everyone to explore the art of Ikebana as a reflection of imagination, emotion, and the living beauty of nature.
