From an early age, I have nurtured my fondness for flower arrangement and tea ceremony under the guidance of Mrs Takagi. I relish studying the “Chabana” connections between Ikenobo and the Tea Master, Senno Rikyu. After an inspirational “Plum only” exhibition by Master Tanaka in my home town of Kurume, I began classes with Mrs Tamura in Croydon after my relocation to England in 1977. Under the mentorship of Master Hansa Patel, I refreshed my Ikenobo skills within the Surrey Chapter. Currently, I teach Ikenobo from my home in Surrey on a fortnightly basis and once a month I teach an international group of students from places such as America, India and Spain via Zoom.
As part of Ikebana International, I act as part of the committee as Zoom liaison and voluntarily support the annual Japanese culture exhibitions and talks at Chiddingstone Castle in Kent. Furthermore, I create floral pieces and arrangements in a contemporary style as well as drawing inspiration from classic Koten Rikka arrangements. I also participated in the RHS Chelsea Flower show with an arrangement of my own design and achieved a bronze award. I also hold a NAFAS qualification as a demonstrator and teacher.
